Effect of Niacin Deficiency on Levels of Free Amino Acids in Various Tissues of Japanese Quail
Lee Jae-Hyok

Shin Sook
Abstract
The effects of nicain deficiency on the concentrations of free amino acids in various tissue of Japanese quail have been investigated. Niacin deficiency led to a marked reduction in body weight gain and weight of organs such as heart, kidney and liver. The most noticeable change in free amino acid concentration in brain, liver and pectoral muscle under niacin deficiency was a significant increase in concentration of aspartic acid. The concentration of serine, leucine, lysine, phenylalanine and tryptophan were reduced. Unlike brain, the concentrations of leucine, isoleucine, tryptophan and phenylalanine in liver and pectoral muscle appeared to be increased. It can be proposed that free amino acids released from protein degradation under severe nicain deficiency may serve as precursors for the biosynthesis of nicotinamide coenzymes and for gluconeogenesis.
